Moving Modernism Upstate
source
date

description

Having introduced modern design shops to Brooklyn, the meatpacking district and, more recently, TriBeCa, John Erik Karkula has found a new frontier. Last week, the owner of the contemporary furniture store Karkula on Walker Street opened Tree & Three in upstate Callicoon, N.Y.

Mr. Karkula bought a home in the area three years ago, and signed a lease on his 2,000-square-foot shop in June. For this venture, he partnered with his siblings, Gretchen and Andy. “I feel really connected to this sweet, authentic little town,” he said. “It felt like a place I wanted to invest in and be part of, in terms of the community.”

The shop’s selection includes tabletop items, decorative pillows by his fellow Sullivan County homeowner Judy Ross and some furniture. Prices range from $4 for an Echo letterpress gift card to $3,000 for a TG-15 leather lounge chair designed in 1952.

Tree & Three is at 39 Lower Main Street, Callicoon, N.Y.; (845) 887-3137,treeandthree.com.
