John Erik Karkula

John Erik Karkula began his design career in 1996 with the opening of the Brooklyn based design shop Breukelen which focused on the work of local product designers. Shortly after, the Karkula furniture showroom opened in the Meat Packing District in 1999. Karkula, who studied industrial design at Parsons School of Design, is inspired by the age old techniques and materials used by humans to create objects, architecture, and tools from local resources. Hand tools of wood and metal, intricately fabricated industrial machinery, and functional factory “”work bench”” furniture of the late 19th century and early 20th century are also elements that inform his work. Karkula is currently working on a line of solid wood furniture made of local hardwoods, which is manufactured in NY State.
