Our business opened it’s doors in Brooklyn in a tiny 200 square foot store on Atlantic Avenue in the brownstone neighborhood of Boerum Hill in 1996. The idea for the store was sprouted at a ganja scented party in the anchorage of the Brooklyn Bridge one summer evening and three months later the store was quietly opened. The store named Breukelen, after the 17th century Dutch spelling of Brooklyn, had a simple mission: to celebrate and present the work of local artisans and designers living in the borough. Breukelen eventually grew into a larger space and garnered much praise and attention from the national and international design community. In 1999, based on the success of the design object shop in Brooklyn, the owners decided to open a furniture showroom of American and European designers in the delightfully dirty cobbled streets of the Meat Packing District. Within a year, the showroom became known for its well curated and beautifully presented collection of furniture, flooring and lighting crafted from authentic materials such as stone, wood and leather with a loving focus on detail. The name of the newly opened Manhattan showroom was changed to KARKULA after the owner John Erik Karkula shortly thereafter. We are currently located in the New York Design Center at 200 Lexington Avenue in Manhattan.
Karkula looks forwards to working with the talented designers that are currently part of the Karkula collection as well as presenting original designs from our own branded collection designed by John Erik Karkula.
See you soon.
